Where have all the good mechanics gone?
Everything you've ever heard about bad
auto mechanics is alive, well and thriving at AJKL in Millbrae
California.
A few months ago, I needed what I thought
was a power steering pump for my company van, a 1995 Ford Aerostar
Cargo Van. I found AJKL while driving down El Camino Real near
my office.
I went in the store and asked the clerk
about the load noise coming from my power steering pump. He said
that the noise is an indication that my pump was in need of replacement.
He added that It could also be that I'm low on power steering
pump fluid. He checked my fluid and said it was okay.
I let them begin work...
3 hours later, I was called to pick up
the van. I go up to the counter pay the bill, and was given my
keys. I got in my van to go and when I was backing out of the
parking space and turned the wheel... I could hear the noise!
In fact, it was much louder than before! What the hell?!?! I
thought. I marched in to the store and the guy that TOLD ME that
I needed a power steering pump because of the noise from my OLD
pump, told me that these type of power steering pumps make this
kind of noise commonly. He also pointed out that I got a remanufactured
power steering pump, not a new one. He said new ones make the
same noise too.
If this weren't enough...
When (I can't remember the guys name now,
but I occasionally see him in Max's Diner in Burlingame) the
guy asked me to pull my van into the repair bay to demonstrate
what he was talking about, we discovered something that absolutely
blew me away. The power steering pump cap cover, you know, the
cap that covers the fluid from splashing out wasn't there!!!
Can you believe that!?! I almost drove
off without a cap on there! Christ!
Man, what absolute inept bungholes!
The guy then told me that the pumps don't
come with caps... That I would have to pay extra from that...
This really happened folks. I swear on
a stack of anything you want!
So, after my insistence that I will not pay for
a cap, the guy sent one of his workers over to the Kragen Auto
Parts Store 2 doors down to buy a cap (they didn't have one)
for my power steering pump.
They installed my cap, and I left.
I'll never go back there again, but what
really ticks me off is they keep sending me these stupid reminder
cards in the mail to have more inept service done on my van...
